The name Weapons and Hope is borrowed directly from the book written by renowned nuclear physicist and mathematician Freeman Dyson.  Published in 1984, Weapons and Hope is an incredibly inquisitive, intellectual, and multifaceted examination of the precarious existence and strategic dominance of nuclear weapons during the Cold War.  From the perspective of many, the peaceful collapse of the Soviet Union rendered much of Dyson’s book obsolete.  We disagree.  Although written as a contribution specifically to U.S.-Soviet nuclear relations, the humanist tone and underlying advocacy of the book remains entirely relevant.  The vision and expertise of Weapons and Hope has partially inspired this blog.

This nonpartisan website is dedicated to developing fresh, inquisitive, and broad-minded perspectives on pressing issues of international security and scientific development.  To a great extent, arms control, nonproliferation, disarmament, weapons policy, military policy, and advanced science issues do not get the deserved attention of our country’s and the world’s youth.  This blog is written from the perspective of a young person trying to engage all generations and all disciplines of thought.

In Weapons and Hope, Dyson explains that “the first step in understanding is to recognize that nuclear war is basically not technical but human and historical.”  This blog strives to insert the concept of humanity and consideration of culture into the contemplation of international security and related scientific development topics.  This includes not only the infamous 20th century technologies, such as nuclear and biological weapons, but also the nascent 21st century technologies, such as biotechnology and nanotechnology.  Without neglecting them, this blog goes beyond discourses that put the exclusive focus on pure metrics, high politics, military impulses, and technocratic perspectives.  This blog synthesizes these topics on philosophical and ethical levels to complement the pursuit and building of hope as we try to reconcile our desires for peaceful lives with the tremendous powers and tools that human societies have come to possess.

The administrator and primary writer for this website is Kirk C. Bansak.  In June 2009, Kirk obtained his B.A. degree from Harvard University, where he majored in social anthropology, with a specialization in the anthropology of science and international relations.  He has approached international security studies from a multidisciplinary standpoint, which has shaped his vision for this website and his style of thinking and writing.

Please note: This website is not created or managed by Freeman Dyson, but use of the name “Weapons and Hope” has received his permission.
